Rumor: Is the honors program in the high school going to be eliminated? (Rumor from March 13th, 2008)
District Response: There are no plans to eliminate the honors program at the high school.
Actually we are looking into the feasibility of increasing challenging course offerings (i.e. AP courses) in the future.
Rumor: I heard that the honors program at the middle level is definitely being done away with.
I thought that this was still an open issue.  I also heard that the meetings are just to appease the parents of the honor students.
(Rumor from March 19th, 2008)
District Response: We are making plans to modify the middle school schedule to accommodate program upgrades. The purpose of the changes is to improve the performance of our middle school students and eventually our high school students. The basic concepts of the plan were introduced to the Board of Education in February for their review and comment. A part of the plan is to increase the rigor of the middle school curriculum for all students. This would include administering Regents exams in Integrated Algebra and Living Environment to all eighth grade students except a select few who would be too challenged to perform successfully. Students would have the potential to leave middle school and enter high school with two high school credits. Currently, only “honors” students have this opportunity. Since most students will be taking the same Regents and respective courses of study, continuing with the “honors” program was not part of our proposal. The Board of Education and Administration have been listening to parent feedback and concerns about the plan at Board meetings, through email and phone conversations, and through scheduled meetings.
Rumor: This rumor/fact is floating around right now……is it true that all the HS cesspools have to be dug up and moved because they were installed in the wrong place and will be under the new wing unless they are moved? (Rumor from March 18th, 2008)
District Response: It is true that the septic system must be relocated to accommodate the new addition to the high school. But to say it was installed in the “wrong place” is not correct. Code requires a certain pitch (downward angle of the pipe) from the building and a minimum distance from the existing water table for the septic field. If we were to have located the current septic field at a distance to allow for the possibility of a future extension on the building the current septic field would have had to be so deep it would have been in the existing water table. This would be a code violation and the Health Dept would have not have allowed it.

Rumor: *Rumor has it that teachers that worked in the WFSD and retired, do not lower the flag even though they gave the greatest gift of themselves by teaching at WFHS. (Rumor from April 16th, 2008)
*Your question does not state it but we are assuming that the retired teacher has passed away.

District Response: the William Floyd School District follows Board of Education Policy regarding the lowering of the flag.  The policy reads as follows…
In keeping with State Education Law and Executive Law, the Board of Education accepts its duty to display the United States flag upon or near each public school building during school hours, weather permitting, and such other times as it may direct. When ordered by the President, Governor, or local official, to commemorate a tragic event or the death of an outstanding individual, the flag shall be flown at half-staff.  The Superintendent’s approval shall be required for the flag to be flown at half-staff upon any other occasion.  Regulations for seeking such approval shall be established in the Administrative Manual of the District. The flag shall be displayed in every assembly room (i.e. the auditorium) including the room where the Board of Education meetings are conducted, as well as displayed in all rooms used for instruction Click here to download the WFSD flag display policy)

Rumor: I hear a good amount of people say that the water in the district's waterfountains reuse the water that goes down the drain of the waterfountain.  I know that if this is true the district probably does this to save water. Nevertheless I am concerned to know that some people may not make the right choices and spit in the waterfountains. So if the spit goes down the drain does it come back up or is there something to clean the water before it goes back up? (Rumor from May 6th, 2008)
District Response: Not true! Any water that goes down any drain in the district goes directly to our septic system and is discharged back into the ground.
