Rumor: I have become aware of some descrepencies over the honesty of the High School Class Council elections.
I have also heard that any teachers and/or students involved may not be punished severely, if at all, for their actions. Is this possibly so? (Rumor from May 19th, 2008)
District Response: There were some discrepancies regarding the High School’s recent elections for executive board and class council positions. The election was declared null and void, and paper ballots were distributed in social studies classes.Teams of teacher volunteers counted the ballots. The students (seniors) involved in casting votes, while they were poll watching, have been asked to resign from their elected positions.
The following is a follow up to the High School class council elections rumor.
Rumor: I have received my letter of guidelines for graduates of 2008. I must ask why the school does not utilize our beautiful football stadium for the ceremony? Is it only good for football events? I have attended numerous celebrations of graduates in the past, there is always an abundance of spectators. Where do you suppose they will be if the bleachers are condemned and unavailable for seating? Our tax dollars should be able to buy our loved ones especially the elderly who come to observe our children a seat. Who ever is responsible for planning this event should rethink it!!! (Rumor from May 28th, 2008)
District Response: We do not use the varsity football field because of its distance from the high school which is where the students begin the processional. We will have some field level seating available for guests but, as you noted, we have many spectators and, even if we used the old bleachers there is not enough seating. We do not distribute tickets as some districts do to limit the number of attendees. New bleachers will be available in 2009 as part of our EXCEL Capital project.
Rumor: Could you shed some light on why two teachers at Moriches did not receive tenure despite the fact that they had high test scores and were kept on for 3 and 4 years. This, in addition to having the support of ALL their tenured colleagues? It seems to me that the "education" of our children should be the bottom line in decision making criteria not who these teachers may or may not have been hired by and that's exactly what the "rumors" are saying occurred. (Rumor from May 29th, 2008)
District Response: We are not permitted to discuss matters of personnel publicly so we cannot address the specific teachers who may be the subject of the rumor you have heard.
The Board of Education and Administration of the District takes the responsibility of granting tenure to teachers and administrators very seriously. The commitment of a District to tenure an individual has significant impact on the performances of our students and schools. Tenure is awarded to teachers who have demonstrated that they are or have the capacity to become outstanding teachers. Our students deserve nothing less.
Rumor: Is it true that the school district is going to go along with the "4 Day Work Week" schedule for the summer that the county is possible proposing? (Rumor from May 29th, 2008)
District Response: Although there are probably many employees hoping for this one, employees of the William Floyd School District will follow the work schedules agreed upon in their employee contracts. At this time, there are no plans to alter work schedules as they currently exist.
Rumor: Rumor has it that a student was caught with a gun in PACA on either 5/28 or 5/29. Is this true? If it is why were the parents of students there not notified of this fact. Also does the school district have some type of notification system in place in case of an emergency such as a gun in school? e.g. texting, email, phone calls. (Rumor from May 30th, 2008)
District Response: This rumor is NOT true. We do have a notification system called Connect-Ed that we use in the event of an emergency. We have used Connect-Ed throughout the year to notify parents about important student safety information.
Rumor: Regarding the High School Class Council vote, I understand that only one student resigned. What is the status of the other students involved in this incident?
District Response: The investigation regarding the student government elections is now complete. The students who were involved in casting invalid ballots were addressed appropriately.
