District Response: The vast majority of our students are extremely responsible and attend their scheduled classes in a timely manner despite having to navigate a very large school building. Hall sweeps in our high school began on November 30th to address the historical issue of students out of supervision and not in their assigned locations (lunch, study hall, class). Instead, this small percentage of students wander the corridors or leave the school for a period of time, serving as a distraction to the classes in session. Students are given sufficient time to get to their classes before a hall sweep begins. The number of students out of supervision has decreased since the first day of sweeps which caught approximately 100 students. In a school of 3,000 students this is a small percentage of students but is unacceptable. Students are immediately sent home from school with a parent if they are caught in a sweep. If a parent is not available to take their child home, the student is suspended from school the following day. Hall sweeps will continue throughout the year. Hopefully our students will rise to our expectations and enjoy a more successful school year.
